Now What?

My last day at Alpine was Friday. The spring conditions were great.  I’m going to miss this ski season. Fortunately it lasted nearly six months.

Next season is just short 6 months away.  So now that skiing is finally over and we’re into the quietest time of the year, what’s next?
Maybe it’s finally time to look at [...]

Beyond the usual and ordinary

I don’t like the word epic to describe a memorable skiing experience.  The word has become overused and an uncreative term to describe an experience that evokes endless emotion for description on one of those days.  Yesterday was one of those days at Alpine extending beyond the usual and ordinary ski experience. I ski 3 days a week [...]

Snowshoeing Prosser Hill

Have you ever been at the top of Prosser Hill in Truckee? Its a little known climb.  That’s probably because Prosser hill isn’t much to look at.  It’s a hill and not a majestic peak. It’s also not easily accessible but the majesty is discovered at the top. While not reaching the heights of [...]

The couch gets reapolstered at Homewood

It was the very early 70s when the quad chair at Homewood was put into service.  A quad chair was pretty amazing to most us.  I remember as a sixth grader cramming 8 of us on the “couch” for the long ride up. I don’t remember much resistance from the lift ops either.  As [...]

Just in time

The new snow this week was an early gift for all wanting a white Christmas and good skiing.  I guess we’ve all been good this year. The new snow also attracted snow bunnies excited to feel Jack Frost’s nip on the nose and the rush of downhill turns.
Trinity and Zoe were inspired enough to make [...]

Picnic Table Snow Report

Picnic table observations this morning confirm a healthy 8 inches of new snow at the base of Alpine Meadows.  The new snow hasn’t opened up much more terrain but it was nice to carve through some of Mother Nature’s own. It was sooo soft.

In Between Time

It’s a frustrating time of the season from the outdoor activity perspective. Too much snow to hike, bike or play disk golf and too little to snowshoe, dig a snowcave or build a snowman. And the skiing is not great. On the other hand it is great if you look at from activity and excercise perspective.  [...]

Thin Conditions

I took a little hike up the Sherwood Forest run at Alpine Meadows on Sunday to make a few turns. Conditions weren’t bad but a little thin.  It was really warm. T-shirt weather. I probably should have tried a different wax.  Check out the photos. It was a beautiful hike all the way up to [...]
